RTC Donates 3,000 Bus Passes to Help Families Access Food Banks Amid SNAP Benefit Gaps
Reno, Nevada (October 30, 2025) – The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County is helping local families stay connected to essential food resources by donating 3,000 adult two-ride passes to the Washoe County School District.
The donation comes as many households in Washoe County face challenges due to the depletion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The passes will help ensure that families in need have reliable transportation to access food pantries, community meal sites, and essential services.
“Transportation should never be a barrier to meeting basic needs,” said Alexis Hill, Chair of the Washoe County Board of Commissioners and RTC Board of Commissioners. “These passes will help families reach food banks and support programs. This is what it means to take care of one another.”
The bus passes will be distributed by the Washoe County School District to families in need.
“This collaboration is about connecting people to hope and stability,” said Commissioner Mariluz Garcia. “Access to food shouldn’t depend on whether someone can afford a ride. We’re proud to see RTC stepping up to support families with compassion and action.”
RTC Executive Director Bill Thomas said the donation reflects RTC’s broader mission of providing equitable and reliable mobility for all residents.
“Public transit is more than transportation, it’s a lifeline,” said Thomas. “We’re grateful to our board members and partners for helping us ensure community members in need have access to vital resources.
