PRESS RELEASE: 24-HOUR WORK TO BEGIN ON 4TH AND WOODLAND ROUNDABOUT

AUGUST 25, 2023:

The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County and Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc. are continuing construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Woodland Avenue and West 4th Street in Reno. Starting Monday, August 28, 2023, weekday marathon work will begin, in addition to daytime work on Saturdays, replacing the current schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Extended inclement weather conditions caused construction to begin later than anticipated in 2023. Additionally, poor subgrade conditions caused significant over-excavation and soil stabilization which extended the construction schedule. The change in working hours will allow SNC to pick up lost working days from earlier in the construction season and accelerate the schedule moving forward. The RTC anticipates the project’s completion in late September.

The following work schedule will be in place for the remainder of the project:

Marathon Work: August 28, 2023 – August 31, 2023 and September 6, 2023 – September 9, 2023 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Saturdays: 8/26/23, 9/9/23, 9/16/23, and 9/30/23 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Project will shut down the following days:

  • Friday, September 1, 2023 through Tuesday September 5, 2023 for Labor Day.
  • Wednesday September 20, 2023 through Monday September 25, 2023 due to the Street Vibrations Special Event.
  • Mesa Park Road will remain closed in both directions until substantial completion at the end of September.

About the 4th Street and Woodland Avenue Roundabout:

This phase of work includes the construction of a retaining wall between West 4th Street and Mesa Park Road, roadway improvements and roundabout construction.

The purpose of the roundabout is to improve safety at the intersections of West 4th Street and Woodland Avenue and West 4th Street and Mesa Park Road. Both intersections have stop signs but high vehicle speeds on West 4th Street make it difficult for drivers to find gaps to enter the roadway.

A study shows that the roundabout will reduce the number of crashes at these intersections by 30 percent. It will also reduce crash severity by slowing the speed of traffic.

The project includes an eight-foot multi-use path and crosswalks to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
