RTC Celebrates 5 Years of Virginia Line University Extension With Free Rides March 7
RENO, Nev. (March 4, 2026) – The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the extension of the Virginia Line bus rapid transit (BRT) service to the University of Nevada, Reno, by offering free rides on the Virginia Line all day Saturday, March 7.
The extension, completed in 2021, expanded high-frequency, reliable service along one of Washoe County’s busiest corridors and strengthened connections between downtown Reno, Midtown and the University area. The Virginia Line provides enhanced stations, level boarding, traffic signal priority and modern vehicles designed to improve the rider experience.
“The Virginia Line extension to the University strengthened one of our region’s most important transit connections,” said Jim Gee, director of public transportation for RTC. “It’s fast, frequent and built around the rider experience. March 7 is a chance for everyone to experience five years of progress firsthand.”
The Virginia Line was the first BRT service in Northern Nevada and represents a long-term investment in safe, efficient and sustainable transportation. Since the extension opened, the line has carried millions of riders and continues to serve as a critical connection for commuters, students, residents and visitors.
Community members are encouraged to take advantage of the free service March 7 to experience the convenience of the Virginia Line firsthand — whether commuting, heading to class, shopping or exploring the region.
