Preventive maintenance begins July 20 on Virginia Street

Overnight slurry seal work preserves pavement and extends the life of one of Reno’s busiest corridors

RENO, Nev. (July 15, 2026) — The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County will begin preventive pavement maintenance on Virginia Street on Monday, July 20, as part of the RTC’s 2026 Preventive Maintenance Program.

Crews will apply a slurry seal treatment to preserve the roadway surface, extend pavement life and reduce the need for more costly repairs in the future. Work will take place overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to minimize impacts on daytime traffic.

Slurry seal operations will begin in the southbound lanes of Virginia Street on July 20 before shifting to the northbound lanes. Pavement striping is tentatively scheduled to begin during the week of July 26, with overnight work continuing from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., weather permitting.

“Preventive maintenance is one of the smartest investments we can make in our transportation system,” said Jessica Dover, RTC project manager. “Applying slurry seal helps keep good roads in good condition longer, reducing future repair costs and minimizing disruptions for the traveling public. It’s also a great example of local fuel tax dollars being put to work to protect the community’s investment in our roadways.”

The 2026 Preventive Maintenance Program includes slurry seal, crack sealing and other pavement preservation treatments on selected roadways throughout Washoe County. These cost-effective improvements help extend pavement life, improve ride quality and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
