TRANSIT SAFETY

Be Alert — If You See Something, Say Something

Your awareness helps keep our transit system safe. If you notice suspicious activity or an unattended item, do not touch it. Notify a uniformed officer, an RTC RIDE operator, or an RTC employee right away. You may also call (888) 682-8227 or 911 from a safe distance.

If you see a suspicious package or unusual behavior on or near a bus, bus stop, transit station, or any RTC property, please report it as quickly as possible.

Be Our Eyes and Ears

No public agency can protect life and property alone. RTC’s transit system is safe—and with your help, it stays that way. Passengers and community members play a vital role by staying alert and reporting concerns.

Become a Transit Watcher

Transit Watchers are everyday riders who help keep the system secure by paying attention to their surroundings. Stay aware of normal activity on the system and note anything out of place. Encourage family, friends, and neighbors to do the same, and get to know local law enforcement and transit security officers.

If You Observe Suspicious Activity

Remain calm and objective. Consider the entire situation before making a judgment, and do not get personally involved.

Keep these important points in mind:

  • Do not take direct action
  • Do not confront the individual
  • Do not reveal your suspicions
  • Do record as many details as possible
  • Do notify the appropriate authorities immediately

Describing Suspicious Behavior

When reporting suspicious activity, be as accurate and specific as possible:

  • Who did you observe?
  • What did you see?
  • Where did it occur?
  • When did it happen?
  • Why does it seem suspicious?

Describing a Suspicious Person

Helpful details include:

  • Sex, race, and approximate age
  • Height (in 2-inch ranges)
  • Weight (in 10-pound ranges)
  • Build (thin, medium, heavy set)
  • Hair color, length, and facial hair
  • Complexion
  • Identifying features (scars, tattoos, missing limbs)
  • Clothing from head to toe
  • Method and direction of travel or escape

If a Vehicle Is Involved

An accurate vehicle description can greatly assist law enforcement:

  • License plate number (most important)
  • Make, model, color, and year
  • Body type (sedan, SUV, van, etc.)
  • Number of occupants
  • Visible damage, markings, or logos
