Traffic Changes Begin Thursday on the West 4th Street Safety Project

 

Reno, Nevada – Major traffic pattern changes on West 4th Street begin this Thursday, October 1 and will continue through mid-November as crews conduct paving operations on the Regional Transportation Commission’s West 4th Street Safety Project.

October 1–29:

  • There will be a full roadway closure between Keystone Avenue and Vine Street. The Keystone Avenue intersection will remain open to northbound and southbound traffic, and vehicles needing to turn onto westbound 4th Street.
  • Traffic will have a one-way movement going westbound between Stoker Avenue and Keystone Avenue.

October 5–November 13:

  • Traffic will have a one-way movement going eastbound between McCarran Boulevard and Summit Ridge Drive.

 

The section of roadway between Summit Ridge Drive and Stoker Avenue will remain open to two-way traffic with a single lane in each direction.

These traffic changes are necessary to reach substantial project completion by the end of November. All construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change.

“These traffic changes were carefully planned by the entire project team in coordination with the City of Reno,” said RTC Project Manager Scott Gibson. “We considered a wide range of factors, including residents and businesses, school bus routes and public transit stops, truck access, neighboring projects, and how to complete the work as efficiently and safely as possible. We appreciate the community’s continued patience as we make these improvements.”

 

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to follow posted detour signs and flagger commands. Drivers can also expect to see an increase in truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone and should use extra caution; trucks may be accessing the work zone through a closure.

Project working hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and may include some weekend work. Traffic patterns and closures are effective 24/7.

About the Project
Construction on the West 4th Safety Project began in February 2026. Project completion is anticipated in November 2026. The project will reconstruct the roadway and introduce new safety and mobility features along the corridor. Improvements include:

  • Complete rebuilding of the roadway for long-term durability and safety.
  • New roundabouts at Stoker Avenue and Summit Ridge Drive.
  • Multi-use path and sidewalk for continuous connectivity.
  • Lane reductions from Edwards Way to McCarran Boulevard to improve safety and calm traffic.
  • Enhanced stormdrain infrastructure to help mitigate roadway and area flooding.

The project represents a $24 million investment in our community.
