Project Description

The North Valleys North Virginia Street Capacity Project is a major transportation investment designed to improve mobility, safety, and connectivity along one of Reno’s key north-south corridors. As the North Valleys continues to experience residential growth and expanding employment and manufacturing centers, improvements to the transportation network are needed to accommodate increasing travel demand and support the region’s long-term growth.

Currently, North Virginia Street between Panther Drive and Stead Boulevard generally consists of one travel lane in each direction, with intermittent center turn lanes. To address current and future transportation needs, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County, in partnership with the City of Reno and other regional partners, is advancing improvements to increase roadway capacity and enhance safety along the corridor.

The project will widen North Virginia Street to provide two travel lanes in each direction, creating a safer and more efficient connection through the North Valleys. These improvements are expected to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and provide additional transportation capacity along North Virginia Street, while also helping relieve traffic demand on nearby U.S. 395.

The project represents an important investment in the region’s transportation infrastructure to improve safety, reliability, and connectivity.

Community Benefits:

  • Enhanced traffic flow and safety
  • Increased roadway capacity to accommodate more vehicles efficiently
  • Enriched multimodal transportation opportunities for pedestrians, bicyclists, and people on scooters
  • Enhanced safety measures at intersections
  • Improved drainage systems
  • Accessibility improvements
