Roundabouts

This safety video, created by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Nevada Office of Public Safety, provides good information to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Roundabout Benefits: 

• National safety studies indicate roundabouts reduce vehicle collisions by 35% and injury-producing crashes by 76%.
• Roundabouts also improve traffic flow when replacing stop signs or traffic signals at intersections by as much as 75%.
• The findings of these studies show that injury crashes are reduced more dramatically than crashes involving property damage only. This is in part due to the configuration of roundabouts, which eliminates severe crashes such as left-turn, head-on, and right-angle crashes.
• By design, roundabouts encourage drivers to slow down to approximately 20 miles per hour, which improves safety for everyone, especially pedestrians and bicyclists.

COMPLETED RTC ROUNDABOUT PROJECTS

• The RTC completed a two-lane roundabout at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Neil Road in 2007. The project involved the conversion of a four-way stop sign controlled intersection to a roundabout at the intersections of Neil Road, Kietzke Lane, and Del Monte Lane. The project also included adding dual right turn lanes at the southbound freeway ramps with traffic signal modifications, including new sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and a public art component. The project grand opening was celebrated on September 13, 2007.

• The RTC completed the roundabout October 2011, linking Veterans Parkway to Geiger Grade Road. The project included widening Veterans Parkway from one to two lanes, installation of sidewalk and street lighting.
