Community invited to Sierra Street Bridge Replacement Project pop-up event Aug. 26
RENO, Nev. (Aug. 25, 2026) — The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County invites the community to attend a public information pop-up event to learn more about the Sierra Street Bridge Replacement Project, a major investment in Downtown Reno that will improve the bridge’s safety, reliability and long-term resilience.
The pop-up information event will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Riverwalk sidewalk near the northeast corner of the Sierra Street Bridge. Members of the project team will be available to answer questions, discuss the construction schedule, explain future traffic detours and share what the public can expect during construction. Project materials are also available online for those unable to attend in person.
“The Sierra Street Bridge serves as a vital connection for people traveling through downtown Reno every day,” said RTC Project Manager Bryan Byrne. “This pop-up event is an opportunity for the community to meet the project team, ask questions, and learn how the RTC is working to minimize construction impacts while delivering a safer bridge that will serve the region for decades to come.”
Originally built in 1937, the Sierra Street Bridge is reaching the end of its service life and has been identified as being in poor condition. The replacement project will improve the bridge’s structural integrity while preserving its historic Art Deco character and enhancing safety and accessibility for everyone who uses the corridor.
Project improvements include:
- A new bridge designed to improve long-term reliability.
- Wider, 10-foot sidewalks to better accommodate pedestrians.
- Enhanced pedestrian crossings and accessibility improvements.
- A new scenic overlook where visitors can enjoy views of the Truckee River.
- Architectural features inspired by the bridge’s historic Art Deco design.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027. During construction, Sierra Street will be closed to through traffic at the bridge, and signed detour routes will be provided. All businesses will remain accessible during construction.
Community members are encouraged to stop by the pop-up event at any time during the two-hour window to learn more about the project, speak directly with the project team, and review informational materials.
