PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The RTC, in partnership with the City of Reno, is beginning construction on the Arlington Avenue Bridges Project to replace the two nearly century-old bridges that span the river across Wingfield Park in the heart of Downtown Reno. To safely construct the new bridges, Arlington Avenue will close between West 1st Street and Island Avenue starting on May 5. Southbound drivers will be detoured to the Sierra Street Bridge. Northbound drivers will be detoured to the Virginia Street Bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured to the Sierra Street bridge. Wingfield Park will also close on May 5 and will not reopen until summer 2026.
As part of the project, there will be safety improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers along the bridges. Construction will include roadway improvements, utility upgrades and relocations, and aesthetic enhancements.
The Art Deco-themed design of the bridge was selected by the community during the project’s design phase. When completed, the bridge will feature all metal railing, custom column lights, and custom pylons. The north bridge will be reconstructed with one support pier under the bridge, instead of the existing two piers. This will help water flow more freely during potential future flooding events. The south bridge will be a clear-span design without piers.
This project consists of the replacement of the two Arlington Avenue Bridges at the Truckee River in
downtown Reno. Additionally the project will look to perpetuate and where possible enhance community
access to the Truckee River and Wingfield park as well as improve the hydraulic capacity of the Truckee
River during flood events. There will be some aesthetic enhancements incorporated into the bridge
design. The bridges, roadway, and Wingfield Park are owned by the City of Reno.
